Antique French Louis XVI Gilded Miroire de Mariage
This gorgeous 18th century Louis VXI French gilded "Miroire de Marriage" is adorned with a wonderful carved wood, gesso, and topped with decorative crest. It has some loss of the gesso and a piece of the right side, only adding to its rich history and patina. It appears to have the original 18h century mercury plate, which has foxed beautifully over time but not so much that the mirror is not functional.
This piece is a well proportioned example of this highly desirable period "Miroire de Marriage" mirror, also known as a Trumeau mirror-- a type of decorative mirror that originated during the 18th century in France. Like other mirrors of this style, there are two extended feet at the bottom which were believed to be made to fit into the flange at the back of the wedding dowry chest—the idea being that a young married couple wouldn’t be nailing things on walls, as they would just be renting. Once the couple could afford their own house, the extended feet would be taken off and it would then be hung on the wall, so you will see versions with and without the extended feet.
DIMENSIONS: 25 IN T x 14 IN W [Mirror 10.75 IN x 9 IN]
All pieces are sold as-is and are final sale. Please don't hesitate to ask questions.
